Evaluating Electrical Distribution Equipment to Determine Replacement Needs

publication cover
by Krista McDonald Biason, PE

As health care facilities undergo remodeling projects, there is often the belief-or hope-that current facilities are capable of handling increased electrical loads. But a piecemeal approach to updates and additions can lead to the loss of a modern, code-compliant, and logical electrical distribution system. This monograph provides guidance on how to determine replacement needs for electrical distribution equipment. Discussed are assessing existing electrical infrastructure, testing and exercising distribution equipment, code compliance considerations, space provisions for existing equipment, maintenance considerations, and strategies for upgrading an electrical distribution system.
