Hospital Electrification: A View from the Finish Line

ASHE’s HealQuest program provides interdepartmental teams at health care provider organizations with a comprehensive approach to lowering utility costs through the engagement of staff in sustainability practices.

For this pre-conference program, the ASHE Sustainability Staff will explore a half-day of this training focused multidisciplinary teams.  Attendees will discuss sustainability concepts like the environment, population health, the economy and aligning those themes with the overarching mission of organizations.  After identifying your unique sustainability motivators, attendees will discuss how incorporating those different perspectives enable effective organizational sustainability teams.

In the afternoon attendees will hear from University of California, Irvine Medical Center leadership about the system’s decarbonization and sustainability initiatives as well as the Director of General Services on how their team is bringing these initiatives to fruition and operationalizing the projects.

Transportation will then be provided for attendees to tour of the nation’s first all-electric central utility plant at UCI Health’s new Irvine Medical Center.

Upon completion of this course, learners should be able to:

• Define sustainability terminology and concepts.
• Explain health care impact of greenhouse gas emissions. 
• Examine how health care organizations can align their sustainability mission to their organizational mission and vision. 
• Identify individual sustainability strengths and learn how to use them to develop organization sustainability teams.  
• Explain the impacts electrified utilities and equipment may have on the clinical space and partners inside the physical environment.
