The goal was to replace the 1960s electrical distribution switchboard that served the A and B wings of Providence Regional Medical Center Everett (PRMCE) Colby campus. The switchboard powered portions of the hospital that house patient rooms and 14 departments, including the hospital’s main lab and pharmacy. Located in a small one-entrance electrical room that didn’t comply with current codes, the equipment was old, and it was difficult to find replacement parts. There were safety concerns for the electricians working in these tight spaces and fear that if breakers were opened, they may not close again, or a failure in the board could take out power to a sizeable portion of the campus. The Stantec team came up with a plan to replace the original switchboard with a code-compliant installation that would provide reliable power for many years to come. The project team executed the construction phasing so that it could keep power flowing during construction for the critical lifesaving functions operating in a 24/7 medical center.
