Description

Reflecting a statewide mission to transform inpatient psychiatric care, the new Austin State Hospital (ASH) — a collaboration between the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) and Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin — creates a state-of-the-art, 240-bed, behavioral health-focused hospital facility that effectively addresses a consortium of institutional design challenges. This session will provide a framework for identifying and navigating these challenges within the context of an 1860s-era, psychiatric hospital facility — from addressing deferred maintenance impacts to balancing automation, maintenance, and operational budget objectives amidst increasing staff shortages and market demands. Speakers will encourage audience engagement, offering insight on forward-thinking, strategic planning considerations and innovative design and engineering solutions for achieving both initial and long-term success.
