Description

Waterborne pathogens in healthcare facilities are a significant source of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) that cause thousands of deaths annually and result in billions of dollars in direct healthcare costs. In the United States alone, waterborne diseases lead to thousands of deaths and billions in healthcare expenses each year, driven by pathogens such as Legionella, Pseudomonas, and non-tuberculous mycobacteria that thrive in healthcare water systems.

This course is designed to familiarize you with the common waterborne pathogens found in healthcare plumbing systems, the technical standards and regulatory guidelines that help manage the risk of outbreaks, and the essential components of an effective water management program (WMP).

Finally, we will review the characteristics and design features of plumbing fixtures specifically engineered to deter pathogen growth, aiming to protect patient safety and ensure regulatory compliance within healthcare environments.
