EC.02.06.01 – The hospital establishes and maintains a safe, functional environment

The Joint Commission states that “risks are inherent in the environment because of the types of care provided and the equipment and materials that are necessary to provide that care.”  A safe environment is a major contributor to the environment of care within a health care facility. The environment of care is made up of three basic elements: space, equipment, and people. Managing risks within the environment of care entails reducing risks associated with the space, equipment, and people within a health care facility. Maintaining a safe environment reflects a level of compassion and vigilance for patient welfare that is as important as any other aspect of health care.
