Life Safety Code Comparison
Michael Crowley, PE, Vice President, RJA, Inc.
Summary
This technical document is intended to provide the user with a tool to assist in deciding whether advancing to the 2003, 2006 or 2009 edition of NFPA’s Life Safety Code is worth the effort. Every attempt has been made to recognize all of the major differences between the 2000 and 2009 editions that have an effect on health care facility design and compliance. The information provided describes the latest policy of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and The Joint Commission. As with any governmental policy, the application of this rule by CMS could change depending on the individual applying the rule, so it is important that each organization call their regional office to verify its interpretation of this central office policy. The Joint Commission’s policy is in writing and include within this document so no advanced communication is necessary.
