Performing an Emergency Power Systems Hazard Vulnerability Analysis

By Timothy Adams, CHFM, SASHE

Summary
Healthcare organizations with an Emergency Power System (EPSS) are required to have a testing and maintenance program for the system and its various components. However, routine testing will not determine if the EPSS is capable of providing the necessary power under adverse conditions for prolonged periods of time. A vulnerability analysis goes beyond just testing to help identify areas of liability, but also finds weaknesses due to inadequate planning, training, clinical preparation and emergency equipment.
