Commissioning Healthcare: Building and Equipment Systems
Robert R. Feldbauer, CHFM
Summary
Commissioning is a quality process which verifies that building and equipment systems are functioning as designed and have proper working relationships with other systems. In addition, there are ancillary benefits to commissioning, such as energy savings, extended life of operating equipment, proper indoor air quality, and improved occupant comfort. The commissioning of new building and equipment systems in the healthcare arena has increased in recent years for a variety of reasons, including poor performance of systems, rising building operating costs (energy & maintenance), and complexity of today’s healthcare facilities. The commissioning process can be used through each phase of a project. Typical building systems that are commissioned include heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, life safety systems, electrical systems, technology systems, and plumbing systems.
