Clean Water Act/National Pre-treatment Program: Implications to Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities

James Gilmore, SASHE

Summary
The Clean Water Act recently celebrated its 30th birthday and while it has made significant strides in improving the nations waterways, there is still much work to be done.  The intent of this document is to summarize the NPDES Permitting Program, particularly focusing on the General Pretreatment Regulations, and its applicability to Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities. Hospitals and many healthcare facilities fit the description and criteria of a significant industrial user (SIU) and as such can expect to included.  Those already operating under a Significant Industrial User Wastewater Discharge Permit will probably experience greater enforcement along with more stringent controls and requirements.
