Effective Interviewing to Select Team Members for Healthcare Construction Projects

Date: April 2001
Prepared by: Paul Burrowes III, FASHE, CHFM, Director, Projects, United Methodist Homes of New Jersey

Summary
The selection of architects, engineers, attorneys, other consultants, and contractors is critical to the success of healthcare construction projects. There are four steps to the selection process: identification of candidates, interviewing, reference checks, and negotiating the fee. There is little published information focused specifically on interviewing members of the construction team. This document will focus on the second of these steps, exploring interviewing processes and techniques that lead to identifying the most qualified candidates. It will investigate interviewing techniques relevant to different interviewing situations and identify how they may be used in the process of selecting members of the construction team.
