Why Should I Complete the 2016 ASHE Energy and Water Survey?

  • This survey was designed by the EPA – and its major purpose is to gather the data that will be used to create the ENERGY STAR® Benchmark.
    • The EPA has asked ASHE members to help provide up to date data for health care facilities.
    • ASHE is encouraging members to participate because getting as many survey responses as possible will ensure that ENERGY STAR® Benchmark accurately reflects the true picture of energy use in our field; and it may provide the necessary data to recertify Medical Office Buildings (MOBs) in the future.
      • Please do not think that your data is less useful if your facility is not currently performing at the level of energy efficiency you would like. Your individual facility's data will not be shared publicly. In fact, without a true representation of facilities from all levels of efficiency, we run the risk of sending the EPA a skewed picture of our current energy efficiency status and challenges (which could make it harder to achieve this ENERGY STAR Status later).
  • In addition to helping establish the current ENERGY STAR Benchmarks – members that participate in the Energy and Water Survey also:
    • Earn up to 10 contact hours in CEUs
    • Can win a $250 Amazon Gift Card (Each region will have one winner, selected by random drawing).

How Do I Complete the 2016 ASHE Energy and Water Survey?

  • The first step is to determine the amount of accessible data in current energy tracking systems. Once you determine your status in those systems, ASHE can walk you through the entire survey process, step-by-step.
  • Is your facility currently enrolled in the Energy to Care Program, OR does your facility have an ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager account with data that was current for the calendar year 2015? If so, please select the button below on the left, labelled “My Facility has a Portfolio Manager Account.”
  • All other facility managers, please select the button below on the right, labelled “My Facility does not have a Portfolio Manager Account.”

 

My Facility has a Portfolio Manager Account

You have made this selection because you:

  1. Are participating in the Energy to Care Program or
  2. Have an Energy Portfolio Manager account - and you know that the data contained within it is current for the 2015 calendar year.

Congrats! Having this data current in your tracking system will make the process of completing the survey much easier for you. To prepare for the survey, follow these steps:

  1. Have your Portfolio Manager Account log in and password ready. The survey will ask you for these items. Once you have entered them, you will be able to share your information in this tracking system with ASHE, which will greatly reduce the number of fields you have to fill in yourself.
  2. Do Some Initial Preparation and have your Notes Ready. The survey will ask you important facility and utility-use related questions regarding calendar year 2015. Some of these questions may require you to gather information from other departments in the hospital. For example,
    1. The total number FTE including tenants.
    2. How many average total meals prepared, and served daily
    3. If you have an on-site laundry, how many pounds of laundry were processed?
    4. Number of pieces of medical equipment on site.
    5. Whether or not you had a mobile imaging van service hooked up to your utilities for less than 300 days during that year, and what type of equipment was in use. (Note: if it was in use for more than 300 days, it will be considered part of the facility’s medical imaging equipment).
    6. If you do not have utility data for 2015 entered into your Portfolio Manager account, you will need to gather all utility bills for that year.

My Facility does not have a Portfolio Manager Account

You have made this selection because you either:

  1. Do not have an ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager account or
  2. Do not have access to your ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager account or
  3. Have an ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager account, but know that the data entered within this account is not current for calendar year 2015.


No problem! ASHE can help you complete the survey. Please email ASHEenergy@aha.org. Remember, we need facilities that are functioning at all levels of energy efficiency – and we need your input to present an accurate picture of our field to the EPA!
