ASHE Recognizes Hospitals for Energy Savings
CHICAGO (June 7, 2010) The American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital Association (AHA) today recognizes the five hospitals for their reduction of energy consumption. ASHE's Energy Efficiency Commitment (E2C) encourages hospitals across the country to reduce their energy consumption by 10 percent or more in support of the goals of EPA's ENERGY STAR Challenge.
ASHE recognizes the following hospitals for their leadership reducing energy consumption:
- Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Ill.
- Advocate Trinity Hospital in Chicago
- Shriners Hospital for Children in Salt Lake City
- St. Mary's Medical Center, Blue Springs in Mo,
- University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock
These five hospitals combined for a savings of 366,837,426 kBtu's of energy which is equivalent to the amount of electricity required to light over 55,000 homes. This energy savings has resulted in greenhouse gas reductions equivalent to the emissions of more than 10,000 cars. Not only were their efforts good for the environment. They were good for the bottom-line as they saved $4.5 million in energy costs in 2009 compared to their baseline years.
Since the beginning of the E2C program in 2006 the following hospitals have also been recognized:
- Battle Creek Health System in Battle Creek, Mich.
- Children's Hospital Central California in Madera, Calif.
