Naval Medical Center San Diego Seismic Upgrades Program
San Diego, CA
The Naval Medical Center San Diego campus includes 23 buildings totaling nearly 2.5 million square feet. With an active earthquake fault running next to the site, a comprehensive seismic program was needed for the facility to understand and mitigate the seismic risk in accordance with State of California and Federal regulations. Rapid screening and seismic evaluations of the 7-story, 900,000 square-foot main hospital, the central plant, and the cooling tower buildings were initially undertaken as the first step in the program because of their critical contribution to the medical center's functionality. The evaluations and preliminary design are intended to meet state and federal seismic requirements for acute care facilities. This first step is being used to develop an overall understanding of risk and to establish an overall program budget for renovation of several critical buildings that are part of the essential facility.
