Kings Mill Acute Care Hospital
Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom
Swanke Hayden Connell Architects (SHCA), working with Skanska Innisfree PFI consortium, has designed the new Kings Mill Hospital in Nottinghamshire, England, for Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust.
The project involves extensive redevelopment of the existing Kings Mill Hospital to create a unified facility comprising 28 new med/surg patient units totaling 600 new beds (50% in single rooms ), a new state-of-the-art Diagnostic and Treatment Center, Emergency Care Center and a dedicated Women &'s Children's Center.
3 T-shaped bedroom blocks linked together over five floors rise above the Diagnostic & Treatment and Women's & Children's Centers. The facility is arranged such that all patient bedrooms enjoy southerly views of the reservoir and countryside beyond.
A two-story elliptical Women & Children's Center has a dedicated entrance, and includes outpatient and inpatient facilities.
The design creates a major civic presence within a sustainable solution, utilizing biosphere strategies, green roofs, extensive natural light and color.
