Mercy Medical Center Master Plan and Replacement Hospital
Merced, CA
RBB was commissioned by Catholic Healthcare West to provide a multi-phase master plan, and design and construction services for a cost-efficient replacement hospital at Mercy Medical Center in Merced. The $115 million, 267,000 sq. ft. facility offers new services to Merced, including invasive cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, trauma care and 10-bed ICU.
The need to maximize operational savings was effectively achieved though highly functional space planning. Through lean design principles, overall square footage per bed was reduced without compromising the size of patient rooms. Private, single patient rooms feature a family centered seating and sleeping area, abundant natural light and views of the therapeutic healing gardens outdoors. In addition, sustainable design features include: storm water retention ponds, drought resistant landscaping, high-performance low E glazing, construction waste management, low VOC adhesives and paint, and commissioning of MEP Systems. The accelerated construction schedule will allow the 161-bed hospital to serve the community in 2009.

Cedars Sinai Medical Center S. Mark Taper Imaging Center
Los Angeles, CA
This 3-level, $32 million, 130,000 SF facility (65,000 SF new space and 65,000 SF retrofit) is a state of the art, filmless imaging center that consolidates the imaging modalities from the existing medical center. As the gateway to the medical center, the building required a design in context with a high tech image, yet respectful of the original Tower. Additionally, maximum space efficiency was required due to the confined urban setting available for this addition. The new building successfully consolidated inpatient and outpatient services within limited space using separated circulation corridors. Providing separate space for use by inpatients allows for a calm, organized atmosphere.
The award winning facility includes: 5 MRI’s (magnetic resonance imaging rooms), 5 cardiovascular ultrasound rooms, 4 CT scanners, 4 R/F rooms, 4 general radiology rooms, 7 ultrasound rooms, 6 mammography rooms, including full support and administrative functions, and a comprehensive department of nuclear medicine.
