Duke University Medical Center
Emergency Department
Durham, NC
The new Duke University Medical Center Emergency Department is a sophisticated, multi-functional building whose state-of-the-art features and flexibly designed spaces are complemented by an unprecedented attention to patient and family comfort. The two-phased project nearly doubled the capacity of the Level I Trauma Center, adding 42,000 square feet in the first phase and renovating 23,500 square feet in the second. With 85 treatment rooms, four triage rooms, four trauma rooms, and a new 7,000 square foot ambulance bay, the ED can now accommodate the 90,000 anticipated annual visitors expected by 2015.
Though a challenge in itself to create a truly efficient, secure, and flexible ED capable of dealing with worst-case scenarios and disaster situations, the project also demanded of the design team the equally important task of creating the best possible patient and visitor experience. To minimize stress, adult and pediatric patients are treated in separate emergency areas.
