Kaiser Downey Medical Center

The new, recently completed Kaiser Downey Medical Center is the result of a comprehensive master plan/study for replacement of the existing Kaiser Bellflower Medical Center undertaken in response to SB1953 HMC planned programmed, and designed the 352-bed, 650,000-SF main hospital; four-floor, 117,000 SF-MOB; second 178,000-SF MOB (currently on hold); 50,000-BGSF central plant; and 1,387-car addition to an existing parking structure. Among the most notable achivements was the integration of user needs, budget constraints, and flexiblity into the design while utilizing Kaiser's new templated building system. This process challenged the team to develop create, cost-effective solution while maintaining Kaiser's commitment to providing standardized care across various hospital locations and cities. Visually striking, a curved covered concourse, or spine, provides clear wayfiding while connecting and organizing the new facility's components around a patient's perspective of needs.
