The patient, caregiver and community experience has been transformed at Kings County Hospital Center. Through the unifying themes of transparency and light, the new development embraces the neighborhood and acts as a glowing beacon of health. In a series of incremental phases, obsolete facilities have been replaced with an efficient and flexible urban healthcare campus that is open, interactive and healing. The new complex consists of three linked pavilions: Inpatient Center, Diagnostic and Treatment Center and Ambulatory Care Center.
The design completely re-invents the hospital/community relationship-functionally, physically and experientially. While the previously fortress-like and inward-looking campus turned its back on the neighborhood, the new campus is approachable and receptive. It facilitates ongoing advances in healthcare while inspiring the caregivers, soothing the patients and engaging the community. The architecture embodies a commitment to the health and vitality of this ethnically diverse and culturally rich neighborhood in south Brooklyn.
