Adopt A Room

Perkins+Will and the University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital, Fairview has partnered with Adopt A Room for this national “dream room” prototype that fulfills the desires of children and families while providing innovative new design solutions for medical professional and hospital staff.
The design transforms the hospital environment for child patients by focusing on four fundamental needs articulated through an intensive research process: sense of control, comfort, connectedness with life outside the hospital, and family involvement.
The innovative features found in the prototype rooms-including defined family spaces, patient environmental controls, a dynamic “magic” headwall and an intensely patient floor plan-all work to address those fundamental needs.
The state-of-the art designed rooms make extended and recurring hospital stays less intimidating, more engaging, and as comfortable as possible for kids and families.
Shanghai United Family Hospital and Clinics

Patient care, comfort, safety, and family and staff satisfaction were the key values that drove the design. One of the design goals was to provide a first-rate healthcare facility that evoked a "home away from home" atmosphere. Perkins+Will introduced hospitality level aesthetics and natural materials where appropriate, while keeping healthcare needs and maintenance in mind. Overall, the effect of the design is modern yet inviting, with a strong focus on familial intimacy, healing, and an environment that supports the dignity, privacy, and comfort of patients.
The 4-story, 48,443 s.f. building houses a comprehensive range of services, including Emergency Rooms and Triage, ICU and NICU units, Outpatient Clinics, Surgery and Endoscopy Suites, Diagnostic Imaging and Testing, and Dentist Operatories. The hospital currently has 35 private beds for Medical/Surgical, Obstetrics, and Pediatric patients. The building is designed for expansion to 50 beds.
