Frank R. Howard Memorial Hospital

The stakeholders of Frank R. Howard Memorial Foundation had one mission in mind for their new hospital: to foster an environment of healing through sustainable design and responsible stewardship. To this end, they enlisted help from their small community, achieving unprecedented support and passion for the project. The hospital’s design team took an integrated approach from project inception, creating a cross-discipline plan that overcame financial obstacles while achieving energy efficiency, water conservation, improved indoor air quality, and significant construction waste recycling. This collaborative approach has put the hospital on track to become the first LEED-certified rural hospital in the state.
74,000 s.f., 25-bed hospital, slated for completion in 2010. Sustainable measures include maximized open space during site planning, water efficient landscaping, reduced potable water consumption, energy efficient mechanical and electrical systems, and improved indoor air quality through use of non-toxic materials and finishes.
Pinehurst Surgical

Pinehurst Surgical (Pinehurst), founded by one of the nations’ largest multi-specialty surgical group practices, was constructed to satisfy the escalating outpatient surgical needs of a rural community. The project team created a design drawing from regional history to create a soothing patient experience at Pinehurst. Expanded service offerings, greater efficiency, and leading-edge technologies significantly elevated Pinehurst’s competitive presence. Within a few months of opening the facility, the surgical group expanded its patient base by 12% and attained a market share increase of 15%. It also houses the only private practice BioSkills Learning Laboratory in the country which is allowing them to tap into the research and training market with this cadaveric lab.
