Carilion Medical Center Consolidation
When Carilion Clinic envisioned their ideal model of healthcare delivery, where patient needs were met through specialized Centers of Excellence, they decided to consolidate their two Roanoke-area hospitals into a single technologically-superior facility at the Roanoke Memorial Hospital location. To fulfill this vision, Carilion turned to the innovators that created their award-winning Mountain Pavilion Addition: the design-build team of HSMM and Skanska, assisted by HOK and Carilion Design Group. The hospital was redefined into four care entities: Women’s and Children’s Services, Emergency Services, Outpatient Surgery and Cardiovascular Services, each with separate entrances. The existing site was redesigned to provide distinct patient drop-off areas and improve vehicular and pedestrian access around hospital grounds. Design and construction occurred in phases to meet the fast-track designbuild schedule and maintain hospital operations throughout construction. The consolidated hospital, including 450,000 sf of new and renovated space, raises the bar for healthcare excellence in southwest Virginia.
