The Christ Hospital, a member of the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati, is a 1.4 million sq. ft. facility with 550-beds located approximately one mile from downtown Cincinnati. Our original building was constructed in the early 1900's and many major additions, most recently being a new four-story Heart Center, have since been added. Our campus includes acute care space, a restaurant, three detached medical office buildings, and a detached student nurse classroom building.

To reduce our hospital's energy use, we installed electronic ballasts, connected our HVAC systems to our building automation systems, and installed new cooling towers and chillers. Our lighting upgrades were financed through our operating budget and had a payback period of only 11 months.

We rely on Square D's PowerLogic® and Johnson Controls' Metasys® building automation and control systems to track our hospital's energy performance and strive to complete 100% of our preventative maintenance measures. We are currently in the process of installing energy management software to control our chillers based upon outdoor air and humidity. In the future, we plan to measure our utilities by wing and possibly by floor to pinpoint the largest energy drains.

After benchmarking ourselves against other hospitals within the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati, we decided to take advantage of the tools and programs offered by ENERGY STAR to see how well we performed against other facilities nationwide. Jim Pretz of Fosdick & Hilmer Consulting Engineers confirmed that our energy efficiency measures had earned the hospital an ENERGY STAR.

By continually improving our efficiency, we're able to reallocate the money we've saved to continue our mission of serving the community in a compassionate and efficient way while providing the very best in prevention, treatment, education, and research.

Communications:
We briefed our senior management on the results of our benchmarking and discussed what the score means to our hospital. We're also planning to conduct outreach programs about our energy-saving efforts to our employees and community.

Testimonial:
"At The Christ Hospital, the ENERGY STAR shows that we can continue our hospital's mission and provide a safe, well-maintained, and high-tech environment while incorporating energy-efficient measures."
