
Compliance with The Joint Commission Standards in the Physical Environment Faculty
Tim Adams, SASHE, CHFM is the Director of Member Professional Development for the American Society for Healthcare Engineering working in the areas of advocacy, code and standard compliance and education. Prior to joining the ASHE Staff, Tim spent over 20 years working in and with hospitals in the areas of Clinical Engineering and Facilities Management, the last 15 years with Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington, Indiana. He is a long term faculty member for ASHE educational programs and is a frequent speaker at ASHE and other regional and national conferences.
Tim is a Past President of the Indiana Society for Healthcare Engineering (ISHE) and the Indiana Biomedical Society (IBS). He is a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) and a Senior ASHE Member (SASHE).
Douglas Erickson, FASHE, CHFM, HFDP is currently the Deputy Executive Director the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE). He is a Fellow of the Society (FASHE), a certified healthcare facility manager (CHFM), and a certified healthcare facility design professional (HFDP).
He has been providing service to the health care community for over 30 years in the areas of Joint Commission Environment of Care compliance, NFPA Life Safety Code® compliance, management evaluations of engineering departments and environmental infection control. He is the past director of engineering for the Joint Commission (1977 - 1981) and past director of design and construction for the American Hospital Association (1985 - 1995). He currently represents the AHA/ASHE membership on multiple National Fire Protection Association Technical Committees such as, NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 1 Uniform Fire Code, NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code, NFPA 90A Heating and Ventilating Code, NFPA 70 National Electrical Code - Panel 15, and is the immediate past chairman of NFPA 110 Emergency Power Supply Systems and the current chair of NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Technical Committees. Mr. Erickson has served on the AIA Guidelines for the Design and Construction of Hospitals and Health Care Facilities since 1978, has been the Vice Chairman of the document for the past 10 years and is the Chairman of the 2010 edition. He is a past Chairman of the NFPA's Health Care Section and a past member of NFPA's Standards Council and a past member of Joint Commission's Committee on Health Care Safety on which he served for over 6 years. Mr. Erickson is a member of ASHRAE and severed on its special project committee to write the Hospital and Clinics HVAC System Design Manual. He was also a member of the CDC review committee for the Guidelines of Environmental Infection Control. He is a featured speaker at national and local conferences on codes, standards, and environmental infection control.
Mike Kuechenmeister FASHE, CHFM, CPE is the Director of Plant Operations with construction over site for West Chester Medical Center which is part of the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati. West Chester Medical Center is a new “Green Field” Hospital currently under construction.
Prior to joining West Chester Medical Center, Mike was with Triad Hospitals of Plano Texas as Manager of Corporate Engineering Services.
Mike began his career with Jewish Hospitals which is part of the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati. Mike has been involved with maintenance and construction at several Health Alliance Hospitals over the past 29 years.
Mike is an intermittent consultant for “Joint Commission Resources”. In this role, Mike provides consulting health care engineering services for health care organizations that need assistance with compliance with Joint Commission and Federal Regulations.
Mike has a Bachelor of Science Degree from Lewis University. He has been actively involved with the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE). Mike has the designation of “Fellow” and “Certified Healthcare Facility Manager” and was elected to the ASHE National Board 2003/2004. He is the chairperson for the ASHE Committee for their Energy Initiative with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Mike also serves on the ASHE Emergency Management Committees.
Mike represents ASHE for the “Office of Home Land Security” and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) taskforce for “Hospital Emergency Planning”. Mike has been a speaker at numerous ASHE Annual Conferences on topics of Utilities Management, Electric and Natural Gas Purchasing, Electric Deregulation, and Continuous Readiness for Joint Commission. Mike was also elected to the Association for Facilities Engineering (AFE) National Board 1995/1999 and holds the designation of “Certified Plant Engineer”.
Susan McLaughlin, MBA, CHSP, FASHE, MT(ASCP)SC is a Managing Director of MSL Healthcare Consulting, Inc., a firm that specializes in providing consulting services and education on The Joint Commission's Environment of Care standards. She represents ASHE membership on the NFPA Healthcare Section Executive Board, the NFPA 1600 Technical Committee, and the NFPA 99 Technical Committee on Emergency Management & Security. Susan is widely known for her expertise in Emergency Management and is a frequent speaker at regional and national programs.
Steve Spaanbroek, SASHEhas over 20 years of experience in the healthcare market, and focuses primarily on regulatory compliance consulting in multi-service healthcare facilities across the country. Steve has served on and chaired numerous committees with ASHE. Steve’s areas of expertise include healthcare facilities management, environmental issues, Life Safety Code, construction planning, safety, risk assessment, performance improvement, and emergency preparedness.
