Tim AdamsTim Adams, CHFM, SASHE
Director, Member Professional Development
American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE)

Tim Adams is the Director of Member Professional Development for the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) and is involved in the areas education, code and standard compliance and advocacy. Mr. Adams has nearly 25 years of experience of involvement in the healthcare physical environment and compliance, with over 20 years working directly with hospitals in the areas of Clinical Engineering and Facilities Management. He represents the ASHE members on advocacy issues, and is a long-term faculty member for ASHE educational programs as well as a frequent speaker at ASHE and other regional and national conferences. Tim is a Past President of the Indiana Society for Healthcare Engineering (ISHE) and the Indiana Biomedical Society (IBS). He is a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) and a Senior ASHE Member (SASHE).

Matthew F. BaretichMatthew F. Baretich, P.E. Ph.D. is President of Baretich Engineering, Inc in Fort Collins, Colorado. Matt consults in clinical engineering, healthcare facilities engineering, and safety management. He does project management for medical equipment planning and construction, and provides incident investigation and expert witness services related to medical equipment and building systems. He is the publisher of the Medical Device Incident Investigation & Reporting manual.

He earned both his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and M.S. in Biomedical Engineering at Iowa State University; then his Ph.D. in Hospital and Health Administration from the University of Iowa. His past experience includes being the Director of Engineering Services at University of Colorado Hospital in Denver, and the Director of Clinical Engineering at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia.

Matt is currently on the board of Directors for Healthcare Technology Certification Commission and the Rocky Mountain Bioengineering Symposium. He’s also on the Editorial Review Boards for the Journal of Clinical Engineering, Biomedical Instrumentation & Technology and 24x7 Magazine. (11/1/2007)

Gordon D. BurrillGordon D. Burrill, P.E., SASHE is President of Teegor Consulting Inc., a consulting firm specializing in healthcare engineering and construction. He spent 13 years as a design engineer, followed by 7 years as the Director of the Engineering for a New Brunswick Health Authority before branching out to Teegor Consulting Inc. in August of 2004. He is a Registered Professional Engineer with 20 years experience in the design, construction and maintenance of healthcare. He is member of Task Groups to the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes, a member of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, a member of the National Fire Protection Association’s Health Care Section, a former Council Member of the International Federation for Hospital Engineers and Past President of the Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society. Gordon is the vice-chair of the Canadian Standards Association’s Technical Committee for Health Care Facility Engineering and Physical Plant, chair of their Technical Subcommittee for Infection Control during Construction, Renovation or Maintenance of Health Care Facilities and vice-chair of their Technical Subcommittee for the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Canadian Healthcare Facilities. John CollinsJohn Collins, SASHE has been in clinical engineering for over 30 years. B.S.E.E. and M.S in Biomedical Engineering. Past experience was at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Advocate HealthCare. Charter member and past president of the Midwest Biomedical Society. Author of numerous articles in clinical engineering ranging from an artificial implantable lung to quality management program for clinical engineers. Current position is Director of Engineering and Compliance for ASHE. Member of ASHE, IEEE, AAMI and ACCE. (11/6/2007)

Jonathan J. FlanneryJonathan J. Flannery, CHFM, SASHE
Acting-Administrative Officer at the Gallup Service Unit
Indian Health Service in Gallup, New Mexico.

He entered the healthcare engineering field by chance in the summer of 1989 as the architectural technician for the CarlT. HaydenVeterans Affairs Hospital in Phoenix,AZ. Over the next fewyears he learned the complexities of healthcare construction and project management and soon was given the opportunity to supervise the entire design and construction section. In 1996 he was promoted to the Supervisor of Maintenance and Operations at the same facility.This unique circumstance gave him the chance to see the challenging differences between design and construction and long term maintenance and gave him the fortuitous opportunity for hands on maintenance experience. In the summer of 1999 he transferred to the Gallup Indian Medical Center, Indian Health Service, as the Facility Manager with complete oversight of the facility construction and maintenance programs, and has continued to work there since. In 2006 he became the Administrative Officer for the facility with overall managerial responsibility for all administrative services.

With his transfer to New Mexico he became actively involved in the local affiliated ASHE chapter, the New Mexico Society for Healthcare Engineering, NMSHE. Over the last several years he has served in a variety of leadership positions within the chapter including Recorder of Activities, President and Past President. As a result of his efforts with the chapter he was awarded the 2005 Regional Leader Award for Region 7. His active involvement also helped to prepare him to be able to pass the certified healthcare facility manager exam, which he accomplished in 2004.

Leo M. GehringLeo M. Gehring, CHFM, FASHE

Leo M. Gehring, CHFM, FASHE Leo Gehring has invested over 35 years in teaching, consulting and operating in healthcare facilities and construction. He currently serves as a member of the ASHE Faculty teaching in the Certified Healthcare Facility Manager, Healthcare Construction Certificate and the Healthcare Construction Project Management programs. He also is a Consultant for Joint Commission Resources specializing in helping healthcare teams reach successful performance levels in the Environment of Care, Life Safety and Emergency Management standards.

He retired in September 2008 as the Vice Chancellor for Campus Operations at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences where he was a member of the Executive Management team serving on the Chancellor’s Cabinet. He lead the Campus Operations Missions including Construction Management, Plant Operations, Parking, Campus Police, Bookstore, Clinical Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, Campus Housekeeping, and Nutrition Services. The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is an Academic Medical Center containing over three million square feet.

Leo has served on the faculty of many healthcare engineering conferences for the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), Association of Physical Plan Administrators (APPA), local healthcare engineering societies and private industry. He has served on healthcare engineering steering committees at both the national and state level. He was elected President of the Arkansas Association for Hospital Engineering in 1992 and in 2000 he was elected to serve as the Region Seven Board of Directors member for ASHE. He was elected as the 2007 President of the American Society for Healthcare Engineering.

He became a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) in 2001 and a Fellow (FASHE) in the American Society of Healthcare Engineering in 2007.

Richard C. GerberRichard C. Gerber, P.E., is a Principal with CDi Engineers in Lynnwood, Washington. He has over 25 years of experience in the consulting engineering field with particular emphasis on healthcare design. He is past Board member of the Architecture for Health Panel and is a LEED™ Accredited Professional. (11/2/2007)

Mike Kuechenmeister FASHE, CHFM, CPE is the Director of Plant Operations with construction over site for West Chester Medical Center which is part of the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati. West Chester Medical Center is a new “Green Field” Hospital currently under construction.

Prior to joining West Chester Medical Center, Mike was with Triad Hospitals of Plano Texas as Manager of Corporate Engineering Services.

Mike began his career with Jewish Hospitals which is part of the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati. Mike has been involved with maintenance and construction at several Health Alliance Hospitals over the past 29 years.

Mike is an intermittent consultant for “Joint Commission Resources”. In this role, Mike provides consulting health care engineering services for health care organizations that need assistance with compliance with Joint Commission and Federal Regulations.

Mike has a Bachelor of Science Degree from Lewis University. He has been actively involved with the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE). Mike has the designation of “Fellow” and “Certified Healthcare Facility Manager” and was elected to the ASHE National Board 2003/2004. He is the chairperson for the ASHE Committee for their Energy Initiative with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Mike also serves on the ASHE Emergency Management Committees.

Mike represents ASHE for the “Office of Home Land Security” and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) taskforce for “Hospital Emergency Planning”. Mike has been a speaker at numerous ASHE Annual Conferences on topics of Utilities Management, Electric and Natural Gas Purchasing, Electric Deregulation, and Continuous Readiness for Joint Commission. Mike was also elected to the Association for Facilities Engineering (AFE) National Board 1995/1999 and holds the designation of “Certified Plant Engineer”.

Richard D. MoellerRichard D. Moeller, P.E., SASHE,  LEEDAP is a principal of CDi Engineers with 33 years experience in the design and management of various projects with a particular emphasis on the field of health care facilities. His expertise includes the design of HVAC systems for specialized patient care areas and equipment, medical gas systems, DWV plumbing systems, steam, hot and chilled water systems; central heating and cooling plants; campus distribution systems; building automation systems; master planning, energy studies; facility investigations, surveys, and assessments, system testing and balancing and project commissioning. Dick is also working in several health care related areas such as; the committee for the AIA published “Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospital and Health Care Facilities and is Chairman of the new ASHRAE Standard 189.2 committee – “The Design, Construction and Operation of High Performance, Green Healthcare Facilities.

Dick Moeller is an active member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE); the American Hospital Association (AHA); American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Washington State Society of Healthcare Engineers (WSSHE); the Green Building Council (GBC), the Building Commissioning Association (BCA) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Kenneth A. MonroeKenneth A. Monroe, P.E., is an independent Healthcare Project Executive, Program and Project Manager. Ken has over 30 years of experience in project management and mechanical engineering including experience in facilities management and project management at several Chicago area hospitals, UHHS in Cleveland and various military healthcare institutions. He has worked on all sides of healthcare facilities: owner's representative, project manager, facility manager, design team director and general contractor. He is registered in the State of Illinois as a Professional Engineer.

Ken is a frequent speaker on project management and taught project management at the Keller Graduate School of Business for several years. He is an active member of numerous professional associations, including ASHE, PMI and ASHRAE. (01/23/2009)

Leo T. OldLeo T. Old, MS, CIH, PE, CHFM has 15+ years of experience in working with healthcare institutions on issues related to occupational safety and health and regulatory compliance. Leo obtained his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Christian Brothers University in 1993 and his Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Memphis in 2002. Leo is a certified industrial hygienist, a registered fire protection engineer and a certified healthcare facility manager. Leo served as General Safety Officer for 4 years at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (SJCRH) in Memphis, TN, where he was responsible for fire safety, emergency preparedness and other environmental health and safety matters. Leo served as an occupational and environmental health consultant for 9 years, including 6 years with Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. Leo currently serves as the Industrial Hygiene Officer for SJCRH, where he is responsible for the industrial hygiene, indoor air quality and hazardous materials programs. Leo regularly serves as a guest speaker at national conferences and local chapter meetings for the American Industrial Hygiene Association, and the American Society for Healthcare Engineering. Terry ParishTerry Parish SASHE, CHFM, CHSP is currently the Administrative Director Support Services at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, Georgia.

Former Surveyor with Joint Commission as a Life Safety Code Specialist Surveyor. Instructor for American Society of Healthcare Engineers Construction Program Worked in the healthcare field for 26 years.

Degree in Business Management from Troy University.

Senior American Society of Healthcare Engineers (SASHE) Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM), Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP).

Served as a Board Member of the Georgia Society for Hospital Engineers for seven years, was President of the organization in 2003, and was nominated Engineer of the Year in 2002.

A member of the American Society of Healthcare Engineers (ASHE) for 11 years.

Steve SpaanbroekSteve Spaanbroek, SASHE

Steve Spaanbroek has over 20 years of experience in the healthcare market, and focuses primarily on regulatory compliance consulting in multi-service healthcare facilities across the country. Steve has served on and chaired numerous committees with ASHE. Steve’s areas of expertise include healthcare facilities management, environmental issues, Life Safety Code, construction planning, safety, risk assessment, performance improvement, and emergency preparedness.

Tim StaleyTim Staley is the Vice President of the Little Rock, AR office for Comfort Systems USA Energy Services., He is a registered Professional Engineer, a Certified Energy Manager, a LEED® AP and a Certified Green Building Engineer.

Mr. Staley has worked for over 20 years in the field of facilities engineering in medical, institutional, commercial, and industrial applications. Consequently, Mr. Staley's abilities and expertise allow for close contact with clients to develop unique solutions that emphasize the best interest of the owner.

During his career, Mr. Staley has specialized in the field of energy procurement and conservation. He has also served as an expert witness in numerous utility rate cases before the Arkansas Public Service Commission. (8/2009)

John WoodJohn Wood, CHFM, SASHE has worked in all facets of healthcare facilities management (maintenance, safety, design & construction) holding several key leadership roles in healthcare throughout his career as:

  • Administrative Director of Facilities at Mercy Medical Center Roseburg, Oregon; a Catholic Healthcare Initiatives hospital, 2007 – 2009.
  • Director of Facilities Services at McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center, a for-profit Triad Hospital, 2005 – 2007.
  • Regional Director of Facilities Services for Kaiser Permanente’s Northwest Region a large non-profit Health Maintenance Organization, 1988 – 2004.
  • Facilities Supervisor at Bess Kaiser Medical Center, 1981 – 1988.

John was the 2008 President and Chairman of the Board of the American Society for Healthcare Engineering. He has also served as the elected Chapter President’s of other professional facilities management associations, including IFMA, Oregon Society for Healthcare Engineers and is past Region 10 Director for ASHE encompassing the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii and Alaska.

John now provides consulting and project management to the healthcare industry as the independent owner of Facilities Management Services. He is a Certified Healthcare Facilities Manager and a Senior Member of ASHE. (3/4/2009)
