Four of the following faculty are on-site at each of the HCC programs.

Tim Adams, CHFM, SASHE is the Director of Member Professional Development for the American Society for Healthcare Engineering working in the areas of advocacy, code and standard compliance and education. Prior to joining the ASHE Staff, Tim spent over 20 years working in and with hospitals in the areas of Clinical Engineering and Facilities Management, the last 15 years with Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington, Indiana. He is a long term faculty member for ASHE educational programs and is a frequent speaker at ASHE and other regional and national conferences.

Tim is a Past President of the Indiana Society for Healthcare Engineering (ISHE) and the Indiana Biomedical Society (IBS). He is a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) and a Senior ASHE Member (SASHE).

Matthew F. Baretich, P.E. Ph.D. is President of Baretich Engineering, Inc in Fort Collins, Colorado. Matt consults in clinical engineering, healthcare facilities engineering, and safety management. He does project management for medical equipment planning and construction, and provides incident investigation and expert witness services related to medical equipment and building systems. He is the publisher of the Medical Device Incident Investigation & Reporting manual.

He earned both his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and M.S. in Biomedical Engineering at Iowa State University; then his Ph.D. in Hospital and Health Administration from the University of Iowa. His past experience includes being the Director of Engineering Services at University of Colorado Hospital in Denver, and the Director of Clinical Engineering at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia.

Matt is currently on the board of Directors for Healthcare Technology Certification Commission and the Rocky Mountain Bioengineering Symposium. He’s also on the Editorial Review Boards for the Journal of Clinical Engineering, Biomedical Instrumentation & Technology and 24x7 Magazine. (11/1/2007)

Gordon D. Burrill, P.E., SASHE is President of Teegor Consulting Inc., a consulting firm specializing in healthcare engineering and construction. He spent 13 years as a design engineer, followed by 7 years as the Director of the Engineering for a New Brunswick Health Authority before branching out to Teegor Consulting Inc. in August of 2004. He is a Registered Professional Engineer with 20 years experience in the design, construction and maintenance of healthcare. He is member of Task Groups to the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes, a member of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, a member of the National Fire Protection Association’s Health Care Section, a former Council Member of the International Federation for Hospital Engineers and Past President of the Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society. Gordon is the vice-chair of the Canadian Standards Association’s Technical Committee for Health Care Facility Engineering and Physical Plant, chair of their Technical Subcommittee for Infection Control during Construction, Renovation or Maintenance of Health Care Facilities and vice-chair of their Technical Subcommittee for the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Canadian Healthcare Facilities. John Collins, SASHE has been in clinical engineering for over 30 years. B.S.E.E. and M.S in Biomedical Engineering. Past experience was at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Advocate HealthCare. Charter member and past president of the Midwest Biomedical Society. Author of numerous articles in clinical engineering ranging from an artificial implantable lung to quality management program for clinical engineers. Current position is Director of Engineering and Compliance for ASHE. Member of ASHE, IEEE, AAMI and ACCE. (11/6/2007)

Mr. Leo M. Gehring, CHFM, FASHE
Leo Gehring has invested over 35 years in managing the environment of care. He is now the Vice Chancellor for Campus Operations at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.  Leo is a member of the executive management team serving on the Chancellors Cabinet. He leads the Campus Operations missions including Construction and Contract Management, Plant Operations, Parking Operations, Campus Police, UAMS Bookstore, Clinical Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, Campus Housekeeping, Cafeteria and Nutrition Services, Mail Services and Telecommunications. 

Leo has served on the faculty of many healthcare-engineering conferences for the American Society of Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), Association of Physical Plant Administrators of Universities and Colleges (APPA), local healthcare engineering societies and private industry. He has served on healthcare engineering steering committees at both the national and state levels.  He was elected president of the Arkansas Association for Hospital Engineering in 1992 and in 2001 he was elected to serve as the Region 7 Director for ASHE in 2000 for a two-year term. He also serves on the Editorial Advisory Board, FacilityCare magazine, IHS Publishing Group. He was elected President-Elect of the American Society for Healthcare Engineering in 2005 and served as President of the Society in 2007.   He became a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager in 2001, became a Senior Member of ASHE in 2003 and a Fellow Member in 2007. Richard C. Gerber, P.E., is a Principal with CDi Engineers in Lynnwood, Washington. He has over 25 years of experience in the consulting engineering field with particular emphasis on healthcare design. He is past Board member of the Architecture for Health Panel and is a LEED™ Accredited Professional. (11/2/2007)

Richard D. Moeller, P.E., SASHE,  LEEDAP is a principal of CDi Engineers with 33 years experience in the design and management of various projects with a particular emphasis on the field of health care facilities.  His expertise includes the design of HVAC systems for specialized patient care areas and equipment, medical gas systems, DWV plumbing systems, steam, hot and chilled water systems; central heating and cooling plants; campus distribution systems; building automation systems; master planning, energy studies; facility investigations, surveys, and assessments, system testing and balancing and project commissioning. 
Dick is also working in several health care related areas such as; the committee for the AIA published “Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospital and Health Care Facilities and is Chairman of the new ASHRAE Standard 189.2 committee – “The Design, Construction and Operation of High Performance, Green Healthcare Facilities.

Dick Moeller is an active member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE); the American Hospital Association (AHA); American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Washington State Society of Healthcare Engineers (WSSHE); the Green Building Council (GBC), the Building Commissioning Association (BCA) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Kenneth A. Monroe, P.E., is a Senior Project Manager with Adams Management Services. Ken has over 30 years of experience in project management and mechanical engineering including experience in facilities management and project management at several Chicago area hospitals. He is currently on the project management team for University Hospitals in Cleveland, where they are managing over $600 million in new construction. He is registered in the State of Illinois as a Professional Engineer.

Ken is a frequent speaker on project management and taught project management at the Keller Graduate School of Business for several years. He is an active member of numerous professional associations, including ASHE. (11/2/2007)

Leo T. Old, MS, CIH, PE, CHFM has 15+ years of experience in working with healthcare institutions on issues related to occupational safety and health and regulatory compliance. Leo obtained his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Christian Brothers University in 1993 and his Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Memphis in 2002. Leo is a certified industrial hygienist, a registered fire protection engineer and a certified healthcare facility manager. Leo served as General Safety Officer for 4 years at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (SJCRH) in Memphis, TN, where he was responsible for fire safety, emergency preparedness and other environmental health and safety matters. Leo served as an occupational and environmental health consultant for 9 years, including 6 years with Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. Leo currently serves as the Industrial Hygiene Officer for SJCRH, where he is responsible for the industrial hygiene, indoor air quality and hazardous materials programs. Leo regularly serves as a guest speaker at national conferences and local chapter meetings for the American Industrial Hygiene Association, and the American Society for Healthcare Engineering. Steve Spaanbroek is the Director of Facilities Consulting Services with Premier, Inc. He has over 20 years of experience in the healthcare market, and focuses primarily on regulatory compliance consulting in multi-service healthcare facilities across the country. Steve has been a member of ASHE since 1998 and served on numerous committees with ASHE, and has areas of expertise in healthcare facilities engineering/plant operations, environmental issues, fire safety, construction planning, safety, and emergency preparedness. Tim Staley is a Principal for TME, Inc., and the President of the TME Energy Services Division. He is a registered Professional Engineer, a Certified Energy Manager, and a Certified Green Building Engineer.

Mr. Staley has worked for approximately 16 years in the field of facilities engineering in medical, institutional, commercial, and industrial applications. Consequently, Mr. Staley's abilities and expertise allow for close contact with clients to develop unique solutions that emphasize the best interest of the owner.

During his career, Mr. Staley has specialized in the field of energy procurement and conservation. He has also served as an expert witness in numerous utility rate cases before the Arkansas Public Service Commission. (11/2007)

John Wood, CHFM, SASHE is Administrative Director of Facilities at Mercy Medical Center Roseburg, Oregon; a Catholic Healthcare Initiatives hospital.

John has worked in all facets of healthcare facilities management (maintenance, safety, design & construction) since 1977. He has provided leadership as Director of Facilities Services at McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center, a for-profit Triad Hospital; as well as in a large non-profit HMO System as Regional Director of Facilities Services for Kaiser Permanente’s Northwest Region. John has owned and operated his own small business providing facilities management consulting services.

John is the current President-Elect for American Society for Healthcare Engineering and will be the 2008 ASHE President. In addition, he has served as Chapter President of IFMA, CRHE, and OSHE professional facilities management associations and is a past Director of ASHE – Region 10. (11/5/2007)
