Small-town, USA - This just in. JCAHO Life Safety Specialist, riding in a chariot drawn by fire breathing dragons, hurls lightening bolts down on community hospital. Hospital destroyed and town infested with vermin.

Does this sound familiar? Everyday you are bombarded with e-mail solicitations that are designed to make you fearful of Joint Commission, OSHA, EPA, and everyone under the sun. They’re out to get you - and the only way to save your job is to buy this book or attend this training seminar or subscribe to this newsletter. Give me a break.

In his 1976 Oscar winning performance in the movie Network, Peter Finch made famous the line “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore”. Well, ASHE’s Advocacy Management Committee is too. So, in response to fear tactics, disinformation, legends, myths, and outright lies - ASHE announces Ask ASHE.

Ask ASHE is the place where you can get the straight information on healthcare code compliance issues. ASHE members participate in committees, task forces, and advisory groups on a wide variety of code and guidance setting bodies including NFPA, JCAHO, AIA, CDC, OSHA, and others. With those contacts and close ties - where better to get the straight answer to the hard questions. Ask ASHE should be your primary source for honest, accurate, and clear knowledge on code requirements and expectations.

How do I Ask ASHE?
Accurate information is an e-mail away. Simply click on Ask ASHE, and then fully fill out the request form providing specific information so we can provide you with a specific answer. And then we will get to work to find the right person with the right answer to your question.

Ground Rules
To manage the chaos we have to have a couple simple ground rules. They are:

  1. Ask ASHE is intended for Codes & Standards questions only. For all other questions, please join the ASHE Listserv.

  2. This program is designed to be a benefit for ASHE members - so you must be an ASHE member to use this service.

  3. You get what you give. To benefit all ASHE members - your question and our answer may be used in any ASHE communication such as ASHE flash, Inside ASHE, or ASHE.org. If you wish to maintain confidentiality, when you submit your question, identify that you would like your name and your organization’s name withheld.

  4. This is not intended to replace your occasional need for healthcare consultants, planners, or design engineers. These types of organizational specific questions will not be accepted. Not sure if your question falls under this heading? Go ahead and ask - if it is, we will let you know.

In the complex, confusing, contradictory world of healthcare code compliance there is a single place to go to tap into a world of knowledge - Just Ask ASHE
