American Institute of Architects
The Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospital and Health Care Facilities, published by the Facility Guidelines Institute of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), is commonly referred to as the AIA Guidelines. The 2006 edition, when published, will supercede the 2001 edition, which is referenced by many federal and state jurisdictions. Conceived as minimum construction requirements for hospitals, the document has evolved to include engineering systems, infection control, and safety as well as architectural guidelines for design and construction. JCAHO states that the AIA Guidelines should be used during new construction.
