Project Description
This 60,000-square-foot, multiphase renovation reinvented a drab multidisciplinary faculty practice building as the innovative, experience-focused, sustainable Maimonides Comprehensive Cancer Center, the first cancer center in Brooklyn. The design and construction team accomplished this transformation over a three-year period while the building was occupied. As the prior multipractice tenant vacated the premises, a carefully sequenced phase-in of radiation oncology, medical and surgical oncology, and infusion and pediatric oncology services took their place in a four-phase construction project. Highlights of the project included three below-grade linear accelerator vaults (the roof of one incorporates a new parking garage entrance ramp). The design reconnected the deep floor plate interior to nature through the introduction of windows, skylights, and a natural, culturally relevant palette on a constrained urban site.
This project has enhanced staff recruitment and generated new attitudes about the depth of services in Brooklyn within the immediate community and the greater New York City region. Maimonides is committed to continuing to explore innovative approaches to achieving “high performance” health care within the community.
